2012 First Reconciliation/ First Communion information for parents

November 2011

Dear Parents and Guardians;

This letter is to inform you about your child's  First Reconciliation/ First Communion which will be held at St. Bernard Church. These are the important dates:

 

Parent Meeting Tuesday, January 17 at 7.00 PM:

It is mandatory that  at least one parent/guardian attends  this information meeting at St. Bernard church. The meeting will cover the most important aspects of the upcoming celebrations and will be hosted by the Sacramental preparation team.  The meeting should be no longer than 45 minutes.  We request you to come early  so that we can start the meeting at 7.00 PM

Sign up: You will NEED TO SIGN UP your child for particular mass  in the church hall on this evening. The mass dates and times for the First Reconciliation/ First Communion are listed below.

Home Workbook: To help you work with the school to prepare your child, parish volunteers will issue a workbook to you entitled “ We share the Eucharist” as an age appropriate resource for home preparation. $10.00 will be collected at the meeting to cover the cost.

IMPORTANT:  You should bring a copy {not original} of your child's baptismal certificate to this parent meeting from the church where your child is baptized.

 

Enrolment Ceremony:

The enrolment masses for your children will be held at St. Bernard church according to the following schedule;

St. Bernard School
Sunday, January 29, 2012 
at 9.00 am or 11.00 am

St. Thomas More School
Sunday, February 05, 2012
at 9.00 am or 11 am

St. Marguerite D'Youville School
Sunday, February12, 2012  
9:00am or 11:00am

At the enrolment, children will receive a blessing, a special enrolment cross and will sign their names in the parish's enrolment book. A reception will follow in the parish hall after the masses.  It is important your child attends this special day with   their friends. Since all enrolment masses are the same, your child can attend ANY SUNDAY if your family can not attend on the weekend designated for your school.

Practice for the First Communion

The children and the parents will be instructed in the manner of receiving the Sacrament of Holy Communion at this important meeting.

Baptism at St. Bernard's

Baptisms are done the last Sunday of each month at 10:00am. Contact the parish office to register your child and for further information at 613-738-1943.

A mandatory baptism preparation meeting for parents is held on the Thursday before the last Sunday of each month at 7:30 pm in the church. Please fill out the baptism registration form and bring it to the parent meeting.

 

Marriages

Please contact the parish office at least 6 months prior to your marriage date. The church can not be booked over the phone. The couple must meet with the Pastor before any wedding date can be booked.

Requirements:

  • Please contact your parish of baptism to obtain a newly issued baptismal certificate for your marriage file.
  • A Catholic Marriage Course is required.
  • We will schedule a meeting to fill out the Marriage Form 1 and other paperwork for your wedding.
  • We will schedule an additional meeting to plan the religious ceremony using the resource book Celebrating our Love.
  • You will need to contact City Hall to obtain an Ontario Marriage License, but no earlier than 90 days before your wedding.
  • We will schedule a wedding rehearsal in the church (usually) the evening before your wedding day.
  • The parish asks for $100 deposit and $175 given at the rehearsal for a total of $275. A tax receipt will be issued if requested.

Funerals

In case of the death of a loved one, please call the funeral home first, before calling the parish. Arrangements for a funeral mass/burial at St. Bernard's Parish are usually facilitated by a professional funeral director.

RCIA Information

The Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) is an opportunity for those who are not Catholic to join the Catholic church. The program consists of instruction to help non-Catholics better understand the Catholic faith, with the opportunity to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Communion at the Easter Vigil.

Our parish RCIA meets Sunday at 10AM in the church hall. Please call the parish office at 613 738-1943 for further information.
