Saint Bernard parish was established in September 1957 under the same titular patron as the adjacent local school. Father Gauthier was appointed as the first parish priest in 1957 and in 1958 oversaw the blessing of the ground and the start of construction of the present church which has a seating capacity of approximately 250 worshippers.
The dedication and first mass were celebrated in March 1959.
Over the years a number of significant renovations have taken place. In 1979, the roof was renovated at a cost of $11,000. In 1991/92 at a cost of $32,000 new interior lighting was installed, a new metal roof was placed on the church steeple, and repairs made to the exterior walls. In 2001/02 at a cost of $200,000, a new front entrance, an elevator, an accessible washroom was constructed along with an installation of a new furnace. A new air conditioning unit was also installed in 2004.
In recognition of the 50th anniversary of the parish, new stained glass windows were installed with the help of donations from parishioners. A fund was also established with the objective of expanding the existing sanctuary and constructing a new sacristy.
The parish has three elementary schools (St. Bernard, St. Thomas More, and St. Marguerite d'Youville) within the boundaries. Each year approximately 150 grade 2 students receive their sacraments in the post-Easter period.
The parish also has writing the boundaries of the St. Bernard Cemetery, which was known as St. Thomas d'Aquin cemetery prior to 1963.
Over the years the parish has had several vists by various Archbishops of Ottawa. 2007, Archbishop Gervais presides at the 50th Anniversary Eucharistic Celeberation. In 2008, the parish welcomed Archbishop Terrance Pendergast on his first pastoral visit to the parish.
The parishioners continue to pray and worship that the Lord will bless the parish in its responsibilities to spread the Good News of God's Kingdom.
